Fasting & Food Miles: Does Where We Eat From Matter?
Does Local Food Have a Smaller Carbon Footprint?
"Eat local" is one of the most common environmental recommendations.
But when it comes to food, distance is often not the most important factor.
Transport accounts for only around 5–6% of food-system greenhouse-gas emissions in widely cited global analyses.
Most emissions occur earlier in the supply chain — particularly through land use and production.
What We Eat Often Matters More
Beef, lamb and other high-impact foods can have much larger footprints than most plant-based foods.
Consequently, replacing a high-impact food with a lower-impact food can often make a greater difference than choosing a local version of the same high-impact food.
Where Does Fasting Fit?
Fasting reduces the quantity of food consumed.
Food miles concern the distance food travels.
These are therefore separate variables.
Someone could fast regularly but eat highly resource-intensive foods.
Another person could eat every day but consume a relatively low-impact diet.
The second person could potentially have a lower food footprint.
The Interesting Combination
The environmental question becomes more interesting when the two strategies are combined:
Eat less + choose lower-impact foods
rather than:
Eat less regardless of what is eaten.
The OneYearFast Lesson
Fasting should not be promoted as an alternative to thoughtful food choices.
Instead, it can be considered one possible component of a broader strategy for reducing unnecessary consumption.
And the evidence suggests that focusing exclusively on food miles misses much of the environmental story.
