72 Hour Fast: Benefits, Hour-by-Hour Timeline and How To Do It Safely
A 72 hour fast is three consecutive days without food, taking only water, electrolytes and other zero-calorie fluids. It is the shortest fast long enough to reach every major metabolic milestone — lipolysis, deep ketosis and sustained autophagy — while still being repeatable by an ordinary person with a job.

- Deep ketosis. Blood BHB typically climbs to 2–5 mmol/L by hour 48–72, giving the brain a clean, stable fuel source and a noticeable lift in focus.
- Sustained autophagy. Nutrient-sensing pathways (mTOR down, AMPK up) stay switched toward cellular recycling for a full two days rather than a few hours.
- Lower fasting insulin. Three days of near- zero insulin secretion is one of the fastest ways to improve insulin sensitivity.
- Elevated growth hormone. Growth hormone rises several-fold during extended fasting, which helps protect lean mass and guards against sarcopenia.

What You Can Drink
A 72 hour fast is a water fast with electrolyte support. Permitted: water, sparkling water, hydrogen-rich water, black coffee, plain tea and unflavoured mineral salts. Electrolyte Protocol
Most 72-hour fasts that fail, fail on electrolytes, not willpower. Daily targets:
- Sodium: 3,000–5,000 mg
- Potassium: 2,000–3,000 mg
- Magnesium: 300–400 mg

How To Break a 72 Hour Fast
- Hour 0: a light vegetable broth with salt. Small volume.
- +60–90 minutes: something gentle and nutrient-dense — cooked vegetables, a little protein, or spirulina.
- +3–4 hours: a normal, moderate meal. Include amino acids to signal muscle protein synthesis.
Avoid large sugary or high-fat meals immediately on refeed. They reliably cause a crash, and at longer fast durations carry a genuine refeeding-syndrome risk.

Intermittent fasting (16/8, OMAD) is excellent for insulin control and adherence, but the fasted window is usually too short to sustain autophagy.
