Editorial & sourcing policy

One Year Fast publishes health information about fasting. That carries a duty of care, so this page sets out exactly who writes it, how claims are sourced, what the site refuses to do, and how it is funded.

Authorship

Every article, chronicle entry and data note is written by Alfie Hammersham, the person actually running the protocol. There are no ghostwriters, guest contributors, sponsored posts or syndicated articles, and no page is published under a pen name or a generic "staff" byline. Each article carries a named byline and a first-published date.

Expertise, and its limits

I hold no medical, nursing or dietetic qualification, and this site never implies otherwise. What it offers instead is experience and measurement: a continuous, unedited primary dataset from a named human being fasting three full days a week for 52 consecutive weeks — daily weight and blood pressure, breath acetone and blood beta-hydroxybutyrate, DEXA body composition, laboratory VO2 max, resting metabolic rate, and five years of metabolic blood panels predating the project.

Because it is a single unblinded subject with no control group, nothing here establishes what fasting would do to anyone else. Where a page describes my own result, it says so; where it describes a population-level finding, it cites the study.

Sourcing standards

  • Physiological and clinical claims are cited to peer-reviewed literature, listed in the references block at the foot of the article and linked to the study record on PubMed so any reader can check the original.
  • Preference goes to systematic reviews, randomised trials and controlled human studies over animal work; animal or in-vitro evidence is labelled as such.
  • Where the evidence is genuinely unsettled — autophagy timing in humans, dry fasting, most peptide claims — the article says the evidence is weak rather than choosing the more exciting answer.
  • Numbers taken from my own equipment name the device and its known limits, including the fact that breath acetone is a rougher measure than blood beta-hydroxybutyrate and that bioimpedance body-composition figures drift with hydration.
  • Historical, religious and traditional material — the Famous Figures biographies, for example — is presented as history and belief, never as physiology.
  • No article is published as unreviewed machine-generated text. Drafting tools may assist with structure, but every factual claim, citation and reading is checked by me before publication and I am accountable for it.

Health safety limits

This site does not diagnose, prescribe, recommend a fasting length for your situation, or suggest fasting as a substitute for medical treatment. Tools such as the fasting weight loss calculator are deliberately capped at 72 hours and carry their own warnings.

Multi-day fasting is unsafe for some people, including anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, underweight, with a history of an eating disorder, with type 1 diabetes, or taking medication affected by fasting such as insulin or antihypertensives. Every health page links to the medical disclaimer, which is the governing document if anything elsewhere on the site reads more confidently than it should.

Accuracy, updates and corrections

Errors are fixed on the page rather than quietly deleted, and where a correction changes the meaning of a claim it is noted in the text. Readings already published to the dashboard are not retro-fitted to look better; when a date or entry was logged wrongly it is corrected and the chart redraws. Articles show a first-published date, and substantive revisions update it.

If you find something wrong — a misread study, a stale figure, a broken citation — please tell me. Corrections are welcome and get a reply.

Funding, independence and conflicts of interest

  • Nothing on this site is for sale: no course, coaching, supplement, membership or paid programme.
  • No brand has paid for coverage, and no manufacturer has any say over what is written. Equipment mentioned — scales, cuffs, breath and blood ketone meters, wearables — was bought at retail price, and lab tests, DEXA scans and VO2 max testing were paid for personally.
  • If that ever changes — an affiliate link, a gifted device, display advertising — it will be disclosed clearly on the page it affects and summarised here.

Reader privacy

The data published here is mine, not yours. The site collects no health information from readers; the privacy policy covers analytics and the email list, and the terms of use cover everything else.

Not medical advice

I am not a medical expert. This website documents a personal project born out of curiosity. I am not offering medical advice, nor am I encouraging anyone to replicate this protocol. Consult a doctor before making any drastic dietary changes.
