Fasting vs. a Plant-Based Diet
Which Has the Greater Environmental Effect?
This is one of the most interesting questions in the entire series.
Suppose one person fasts regularly but eats a high-meat diet on feeding days.
Another eats every day but follows a predominantly plant-based diet.
Which has the smaller environmental footprint?
There is no universal answer without knowing the quantities and foods involved.
But research consistently shows that dietary composition matters enormously.
Meat and dairy generally have substantially higher greenhouse-gas footprints than plant-based foods.
Fasting Changes Quantity
Fasting primarily changes when and potentially how much we eat.
A plant-based diet primarily changes what we eat.
These are fundamentally different interventions.
The Potential Combination
The environmental effect could potentially be greater when the two are combined:
Less food + lower-impact food
rather than treating fasting as a substitute for dietary change.
But Calories Aren't the Whole Story
Nutrition matters.
A person cannot simply remove food indefinitely without consequences.
The environmental discussion must therefore remain separate from medical recommendations about how much an individual should eat.
The goal is not to encourage undernutrition.
It is to investigate whether unnecessary consumption can be reduced.
The Bigger Question
Perhaps the most interesting question is not:
"Is fasting better than a plant-based diet?"
but:
"How do the environmental effects of eating less compare with changing what we eat?"
That is a question that can be investigated using real dietary data.
