Fasting & Agricultural Land
How Much Land Does Our Food Require?
Food doesn't simply require calories.
It requires physical space.
Agriculture occupies approximately half of the world's habitable land.
This land is used for:
- Crops
- Livestock
- Animal feed
- Pasture
- Infrastructure
The amount of land required varies enormously by food.
Animal Products and Land
Animal agriculture can require land both directly and indirectly.
Animals may require pasture, while crops may be grown to feed them.
This is one reason why animal products generally have much larger land footprints than most plant-based foods.
Where Does Fasting Fit?
If fasting genuinely reduces food consumption, fewer agricultural resources may ultimately be required to supply that consumption.
But again, the effect depends on what food is avoided.
A reduction in high-land-footprint foods could have a different environmental significance from an equivalent caloric reduction in low-footprint foods.
Fasting and Land Efficiency
This leads to an interesting concept:
Could consuming fewer calories allow the food system to produce what humans need using less land?
At a global scale, land use is influenced by many factors beyond individual diets.
Nevertheless, reducing demand for resource-intensive foods could theoretically contribute to lower land requirements.
Fasting Is Not the Whole Answer
Fasting alone cannot solve agricultural land pressures.
Food choice, agricultural practices, yields, food waste and land management are all important.
But fasting adds another variable:
How much food do we actually need?
That question is worth asking.
