For most of human history, two things were impossible to avoid: periods without food and regular exposure to sunlight.

Today, modern life has changed both. We eat almost continuously, spend much of our day indoors, work beneath artificial lighting, and often experience very little natural sunlight. While fasting has become increasingly popular as a way to improve metabolic health, few people consider another essential ingredient of our evolutionary environment—sunshine.

At One Year Fast, we believe fasting should not be viewed in isolation. It is one piece of a much larger picture of human biology. Sunlight may be another.

Our Bodies Were Designed for Both

Humans evolved over hundreds of thousands of years in environments where eating was unpredictable but sunrise was not.

Every morning the rising sun signaled the beginning of activity. Hunting, gathering, walking, working and social interaction all occurred outdoors under natural light.
